Written by Rachel Bond
Sunday, 20 July 2008
ImageTango Synergy's Wednesday night milonga venue, Mr Mary's Hotel, has unfortunately had to close its doors. All of us in the Synergy committee would like to thank the many tangueros who have come from Sydney and further afield to dance, DJ or otherwise support us at this gorgeous venue over the past year. As an association, we are what our members make us! But don't fear, our regular Wednesday night milongas will continue. Keep your Wednesday nights booked in and watch this space for news of our new venue! Rachel

Milonga at the Paragon Cafe
Paragon cafe milonga - Photo by Isao

Held over the weekend of 4-6 July, Tango Synergy's annual Yulefest milonga attracted tangueros and friends from Sydney, Canberra and even further afield to enjoy three milongas in two stunning venues: the Paragon Cafe and the Carrington Hotel.

The Art Deco ambience was enhanced by music of the era and by the stunning outfits that participants put great effort into. Synergy was joined by Anne-Maree of Newtango whose musical selections kept everyone happy on the Friday night, and by the band TangoCentric playing at the Sunday milonga. Many thanks are also due to Nelson for sharing his knowledge of Canyengue at a free workshop on the Saturday afternoon.

Tango Synergy in conjunction with Newtango Presents
A Magical Weekend in the Blue Mountains.

During Yulefest, Tango Synergy will yet again present their signature 1920’s Carrington Hotel Milonga in the heart of Katoomba Blue Mountains NSW, and that’s not all......This year, together, we are creating a more diverse tango experience spanning the entire weekend of Friday 4th July to Sunday 6th July 2008. Featuring: a live tango band, three themed milongas and two elegant venues.
Numbers are limited for this wonderful weekend of tango so remember to book early.

FRIDAY 4th JULY 8PM TILL MIDNIGHT

The world famous Art-Deco Paragon Cafe in Katoomba and Anne-Maree from Newtango are presenting a tango evening imbued with the charming ambiance of days gone by. This is the inaugural milonga of the Yuletide Tango Festival and promises to be a night of quiet glamour in luxurious settings. Wear your elegant finest threads and experience dancing on an original 1920's sprung dance floor after dining in the little cafe out the front! Milonga goes from 8 till midnight , dinner stops being served at 9pm. Dinner prices range from $15 -$20.

SATURDAY 5th JULY 2PM TILL MIDNIGHT

2.30pm to 3.30pm Canyengue workshop with Nelson who has kindly agreed to come back this year to share his extensive knowledge. Canyengue (cañiegue) predated tango and milonga dances, from the era of 1890-1920. The music from this era had a faster or peppier tempo so the dance had a rhythmic flavor similar to that of a speedy milonga.
The couple danced lifting their feet off the ground, because of the dirt floor in the poor districts with a unique posture which nelson will reveal to us in this specialsed workshop. Make sure you don't miss this opportunity as Nelson is rumored to be moving back to live in Buenos Aires.

6pm till midnight Synergy's annual 1920's themed milonga, the highlight of the tango weekend. Following on from last year's huge success, come and tango in the Carrington's 1920's stylish ballroom, surrounded by flowing feather bowers, dashing silk cravates and music from the golden era. Step back in time and experience 1920's style and grace that can be only found in such a historic venue. During the evening we will have a tantalising taste of Tangocentric who will delight us with authentic period music, this milonga includes a light supper.
  SUNDAY 6th JULY 12 noon to 4pm
Tango Synergy invite you to finish this spectacular weekend with a funky relaxed milonga and practica featuring Tangocentric, one of sydneys premier tango groups . The versatility of Tangocentric enables dancers to traverse the floor to the sounds of traditional and neotango tunes.

Tangocentric came together in 2006 as a collaboration between urban eXcentrics, Newtango Dance Studio director Anne-Maree Therkleson and tango musicians specialising in the artform. Tangocentric have played at The National Folk Festival in 2007 and 2008, Bulli Folk Festival in 2008, Fete de la Musique, Mosman Gallery 2007, Blue Mountains Tango Festival in July 2008 and an invitation to present a Tango concert and dance workshop at Newcastle Conservatorium in August 2008. Tangocentric in its minimum form consists of Tony Pyrzakowski - violin, Ann Palumbo - guitar, Paul Laszlo - double bass and Ben Palumbo - voice.
